Where was I?
Right! I believe the feet are still improving. Mind you, I have to make a real conscious effort to cast my mind back a few days before I can compare how they were to how they are. People say that 'you don't remember pain'; maybe that's what they mean. The worst remaining problem last night was that the big* toe on my right foot (but only that toe) still felt as if somebody had recently hit it with a hammer. This morning it doesn't - in fact, it doesn't even feel particularly numb; on the other hand (hand?) there are bits of glass in my right foot which certainly weren't there last night.
Here's something I haven't mentioned before (didn't want to overburden you with information, you see). Since deciding to do something about my diabetes at the week-end, I've been taking my blood sugar level every morning before eating ('a jeune' as the old frogs have it). The machine tells me that during the last seven days my blood sugar level has averaged 139 mg/dl which, it tells me, is 'in range'. During that time its level has swung between 114 and 164, all readings being 'within range'.
So that's all right then.
Oddly enough**, I bought the machine a couple of months ago, but when I first used it, the readings were all over the place - 'hypo' one minute, 'hyper' the next - so I got discouraged and gave up. Yes, I know; but that's how my psychology works. Yours probably does too, did you but know it.
Anyway, off to grab some breakfast: walnuts, nuts and raisins, blueberries and raspberries, milk and some muesli, I suppose. Or maybe just a boiled egg. Actually I quite fancy an egg - and I still have a pack to finish that I bought last week. On the other hand, how long can I keep the blueberries and raspberries? Remember what I said about trying not to throw food away? It can be a bugger. I mean, it would be OK if I weren't also trying to lose weight.
Right! Breakfast, and then an hour on the medical claims - you see, I hadn't forgotten them (for once). Then it's up to the pool, oh yes!
Going back to the beginning, and the question of a title for this piece, I think I inadvertently hit upon it in the first para: 'If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there'.
Pip pip!

* In the 19th century it was always the 'great' toe. Wonder why we changed. And why does 'great' toe now sound pretentious? And why is pretentious spelt with a 't', when pretension is spelt with an 's'? And why is there no bloody spell checker on this site? Oh God, it's going to be one of those days . . .
** Many years ago, a guy called Jennings (Paul Jennings?) published a series of essays under the title 'Oddly enough'. Then he published a sequel; it was called 'Even Oddlier'. Wish I'd thought of that.
